Australian Nationals 2018

First Major of the 2018 season

Australia Invaded by Foreigners – again !

In 1788 Captain Cook and his Crew invaded our shores from England and claimed Australia as theirs.
In 2018 Captain Mike Holt and his crew Rob Woelfel invaded ours shores from The USA and claimed the Australian 5O5 title as theirs !
( Where’s our Border Protection when you need it most ? )

In an awesome display of disciplined & consistent sailing, Mike & Rob won the 9 race Aussies Nationals with a total of 11 points, discarding two 3rd placings. (Wow… )
I suppose three 1st places and four 2nd places, best defines the word “consistent”.
Most of us would be very proud to include 3rd placings in our results, but the current and 3 times World Champions in Mike & Rob prefer to discard such “disappointing results”.

With 40 entries, this was the largest fleet in many years and arguably the “hottest” fleet the Aussie Nationals have ever had with the inclusion of Mike & Rob and twice World Champion, Jan Saugmann from Denmark in the entry list.
Jan finished 2nd overall with 22 points. Crewing for Jan was Marcus Cooper from Adelaide, undoubtedly one of the fittest and strongest crews in the fleet

Check out these credentials:-
Mike Holt – World Champion 2014, 2015 & 2017
Rob Woelfel – Crew with “Holtie” in 2014
Jan Saugmann – World Champion 2007 in Adelaide & 2012 in La Rochelle.
.
To add to the “credibility” of these two top placings, both teams were racing in borrowed boats
Our rules of the game, precludes overseas entries from being named “Australian Champion”, this year that title goes the 3rd place getter overall in Mick Babbage & James McAllister with a total of 26 points. The second Aussie title for this team.
Mick & James are local Lake Macquarie sailors and revelled in their home waters.

4th & 5th both had a total score of 27points with 4th overall going to Michael Quirk & Joe Castle with Malcolm Higgins & Nick (Camel) Johnson coming 5th after a countback.

Despite the resounding win by “Team USA” it was a hotly contested event with 6 different heat winners from the 9 race schedule.
